Frequently Asked Questions

What stage should my book be in to join the Club?

Exactly where you are.

Because your Club experience is customized for you, we’ll meet you there and help you make the next big leap.

If you are at or near the beginning of your book, we’ll help you hone in on your best and brightest book concept. The Club will be a place to take concrete steps toward completion. You’ll gain new skills to get a powerful head start on your book, saving you precious time and hair-pulling through your entire writing process.

If you’re partway through your book, or have finished a draft, but you’re wrestling major issues with structure/theme/plot/character, the Club will offer you huge relief. We’ll sort through the confusing parts and provide strategies to help you finish your manuscript with confidence.

If you’ve been working on your book for WAY too long, the Club will be a refuge for you. Many of our authors have been nursing a book for years, some for decades. We offer practical tools and strategies for wrangling the research, drafts, ideas, and inner critics that have inevitably accumulated. We specialize in delving into the #1 obstacle that has prevented you from finishing your book and help you bring fresh energy to your writing so that you can finally finish.

If your book is almost done, congratulations! Enjoy our unique “revision season” curriculum and coaching designed to help polish your manuscript, writing sample, synopsis, and/or book proposal so that they can go out and shine.

What can I really accomplish in a four-month plan?

A ton! Your first coaching session will orient you to the Club and help you set short- and long-term goals. With focused support and coaching to bust through blocks, here are some triumphs that our Unicorn authors have achieved in 4 months:

  • Drafted 30,000 words of a memoir.
  • Drafted 50,000 words of a how-to book.
  • Completed a revision of a novel.
  • Wrote a nonfiction book proposal and submitted it to literary agents.
  • Developed a sample chapter and outline for a new book.
  • Compiled poems written over many decades into a cohesive, submission-ready (and eventually prize-winning!) manuscript.
If I choose the four-month plan, can I extend it? I’m not sure I can actually finish my book in this time period.

Definitely. After your initial plan, you’ll have options to renew for four more months or one year.

What’s the time commitment?

Ideally, you should have at least 2-4 hours per week to devote to your book. If carving out time is tough, or you have the time but find yourself not writing, that’s the first thing we’ll work on when you join the Club. You can also expect that as you gain momentum, you will fall in love with your manuscript and will want to spend more and more time with it.

Will there be a mix of genres?

Yes, all genres are welcome. Our members are currently writing fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry, graphic narratives, and hybrid/experimental books.

How many coaching sessions do I get?

Every membership includes two types of coaching.

One Story/Skills coaching session per month: These 1:1 breakthrough sessions open the path for you to move your manuscript forward. Our accomplished Story/Skills coaches are published authors who guide you through issues of story, structure, and craft, and will review up to 20 pages of writing per session.

One Sanctuary coaching session per month: Use this support to create a personalized plan for your book, develop a sustainable and joyful writing practice, and strategize around blocks and inner critics.

BONUS: In your first month, you can schedule weekly sessions to get your momentum going.

Who will be my coach?

You are welcome to schedule with any of our coaches.

Based on your application, we’ll initially suggest matches for you with coaches who we think can best meet your needs. If you’d like to work with a particular coach from our team, just let us know. You can stay with the same coach for your entire membership, or try out several coaches for different perspectives and areas of expertise.

Is this a critique workshop? Traditionally they haven’t worked out well for me as I tend to give more than I get, especially in reading other people’s work.

Nope! You’re never required to read anyone’s work (though you’ll have the option if you want to join a peer feedback circle). The Club is designed to relieve you of the burden of organizing your own support.

I’m in another time zone / work odd hours / am a vampire. What’s the exact schedule? Are there recordings?

We straddle time zones, with authors and team members joining from all over—historically, across the United States, as well as Argentina, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Ghana, India, the Netherlands, and Tobago.

We record monthly craft talks and occasional workshops, and make them available for viewing (along with transcripts) within a couple of days. Members have access to a treasured archive of all past event recordings.

Members meet to co-write throughout the week, including early-bird and night-owl times. Any time that you want to write, you’ll probably find someone excited to write with you. We do not record Club events that consist mainly of member sharing, such as co-writing and group coaching sessions.

Please see the “Why Join?” page for exact timings of regular events.

What platforms do you use?

Our main “Clubhouse” is on the Mighty Networks platform, a private members-only network that feels as interactive as Facebook, but with no advertising or distractions. Club events are held on Zoom. Live coaching sessions are on Google Meet and can be held on Zoom by request.

What about Disability Justice and access needs?

We use Zoom’s automatic closed-captioning and transcripts. Our team and current membership include people with neurodiversities, chronic conditions, and disabilities. If ASL or other human or technology solutions are helpful for you, please let us know. When you join, we’ll ask you about your access and accommodation needs, and we are delighted to work with you to meet them.

Do you work with writing in languages other than English?

Yes, we currently support writers writing in Spanish. We offer coaching and curriculum materials in Spanish as well as provide Spanish interpretation during our Zoom events as needed. If you would like to inquire about other languages, please contact us.

Is there a guarantee? Do you give refunds?

No, and no.

We’re excited to have you, but no one can guarantee your outcome. We know that life happens. You are 100% free to change your mind. Some authors work on a book through several coaching sessions and then have the “Aha!” that they want to write a completely different book. Or go to grad school. Or climb an actual mountain. Some authors get into the work and then realize that writing is really hard. A lot of labor has gone into making sure that you have all the information you need in order to make the decision, so please make sure it’s a good fit before you buy. We can guarantee that our work together will illuminate what it’ll take to finish your book, but only you can choose whether to cross that finish line. And we’ll be in your process with you 100%.

Are there any discounts, scholarships, payment plans, etc.?

Thanks to our generous donors and partnerships, we often have opportunities to apply for a fully or partially subsidized membership for writers who qualify, and we share those on our mailing list and social media ( ). We do not have barter, sliding scales, or payment plans. The annual plan is slightly discounted vs. the four-month plan.

Can you do a writing workshop for my group or organization?

Yes! Please contact us to inquire about a custom session. We do as many of these as we can, especially for groups (even small ones) that are 50% or more BIPOC authors, and we try to set rates that everyone in your group can afford. We would love to share some Unicorn magic with your community.

Can I talk to you about my book and whether or not the Club is for me?

Yes, we often hold office hours/information sessions for the Club. Please join our mailing list to receive an invitation.
